Weeknotes 26-24

Busy week!!! I wrote all of this monday and just forgot to post lol oops

Monday was the Apple keynote where they announced iOS/macOS 27, the first 15 minutes of the keynote was amazing, just them listing all the new speed improvements and minimal new features, made me so hopeful for the future of the OSes, but then the next 40 minutes was them just talking about new siri AI features, lmao nvm. Wednesday I did another playtest of my friend’s game, it’s coming along really well I think! He revamped one of the core gameplay loops and I think it’s much better for it, making it much more unique and an interesting way of handling friendslop loop boredom, though I think with the consequence that it’ll be a lot harder to balance and get feeling right for release. We’ll see!!! Hopefully I get to playtest it again 🙂‍↕️ Thursday I went to pinball again, did Fine (I pretty much get a 12 every time) but I got to hang out with everyone which is always fun. This was my first one going without sean and in a way there’s something nice knowing that I don’t exist purely in the context of the person I met these people through!!!! yay

Friday started my Movie Weekend with Disclosure Day, which was a good time at the movies but I don’t think I’d say it was good. It felt like I was watching a mid-budget action movie from 2008 in every way possible. Lots of really good camerawork and acting paired with a pretty whatever plot and a really funny, conceptually, ending, even though it hit when I was watching it!!!!! But it’s crazy whenever I see a movie where a core part of the plot is like, “giving the people access to information will wake them up to the evils of the world” or whatever because I think history has shown that it truly does not matter. Sorry for being cynical!!!!

But on a better note, after the movie we went to a bar to watch the USA vs Paraguay world cup game. At first I (and my coworkers) were like “ohhh okay we’ll stay for like 30 minutes” and then within 15 minutes all of us were invested and stayed for the full game. I’m sure there’s lots of negatives about it that I don’t see since I’m not in the culture, but I love everything going on with the world cup right now. Like the vibes in the city have been great, and there’s something fun about this limited time event that everyone can bond over.

Saturday I went to go see Backrooms with Olivia, SUPER good, I liked it way more than I expected. I know people are tired of the therapy/trauma horror movie but I feel like it worked a lot better than most. The construction of memory into a maze-like space was just super effective for me. Also really well shot and the practical set design was really impressive. Also really funny that despite growing up in corners of the internet where this kind of thing thrived, it’s definitely way past my prime so this video is the only reference point of what the backrooms was lmao

Sunday!!!!! Woke up super early and went birding with sean and david. Birding has been david’s new thing recently and even if I can’t identify most birds it’s a nice excuse to get outside and walk around lol. Then I went out for dinner with some coworkers because we were seeing Underscores!!!!!!! yippee!!! Umru opened and it was a good set as always even though the crowd was clearly not into it lol, and Underscores was incredible! Sorry to sound like a stan but the whole set reminded me of Porter Robinson’s live shows. Like all of the older songs she played were remixes and there were a bunch of live edits that she did, either extending intros/outros or adding new sections. She had her own kpop-style light sticks that were crowd synced so during a bunch of songs everyone’s would light up the same color or strobe or something, super cool. Garrett gave me his near the end of the show :’))))) Crazy to think that this will be the last time I get to see her in a venue this small, I have to imagine. She’s only been getting more and more popular, with this show completely sold out and resale going for almost 200 dollars, opening for Charli in the fall (lol), etc. Also crazy to think that I once saw her in 2019 in a veune of maybe 60 capacity??
