Weeknotes 26-33
Big Walk, 2026 GOTY, has finally released. Seven friends and I played on Monday and it’s SO fun. We had a pretty scuffed start to the session (I tried running it on my Macbook, but I guess it’s not powerful enough even when playing on medium settings) but it came together so well by the end. Such an incredible exercise in game design, making a co-op game that is entirely about communication. When you have a party size of 8 you’re inevitably going to split up just with some people being impatient or wanting to check something out in the distance, and all of the fun things that arise from that. Like at one point two of our party members got lost, but the rest of us went to the tower and kept firing off flares and then, looking through the binoculars, I see two small figures in the distance walking toward us!! Even though it was the end of the night, I was glad that we managed to all get back together in the end. Can’t wait to play more!
Huge huge news, Olivia and I finished watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer!!! I started watching it back in September of 2024, after watching I Saw the TV Glow and talking about it with her, and she was like “well you have to watch Buffy to get the references”. I had only intended on watching a couple of episodes but here we are 144 episodes later. Pretty incredible show honestly, I can see why it was so influential. It has its low points (the seasons where they didn’t know how to write Xander, the mid-run season 4 slump) but the highs more than make up for it (the entire first three seasons, seasons 5 and 6, Spike……..). It was especially fun watching with Olivia, someone who LOVES the series and has watched it a bunch of times. Both so that she could experience it for the first time through me, and I could get insight through her repeated watches. Some of that final season was rough, but ultimately I’m very satisfied with where it ended. YAy
Manga club met again, this time reading Orange. I first read it back in high school, but never read any of the followup volumes that were published after the initial run. Honestly???? Could have done without the followups lol. I feel like it’s a good sign of my Matured Media Criticism Brain that I felt a bit differently about it on this re-read than back in high school. I ultimately did like it, but I think less on a re-read just due to me wanting a bit more out of it. Though hey maybe that’s just my tastes shifting instead.
Over the weekend Sean and I visited our friend Delton in Portland Maine!!!!!! Somehow, despite being in the area a bunch of times, I’d never been to Portland proper. They had come down to Boston to visit a couple weeks ago and we made plans for us to come visit them this week. Our building is getting the driveway repaved so we took the Amtrak up and honestly?? The better experience!! So nice being able to sit and read, go to the cafe car, travel through the woods and through marshes.
Some highlights:
- Speckled Ax coffee: got a really yummy pour over coffee (colombia finca santa barbara washed anaerobic geisha but honestly………. I think I liked Delton’s Ethiopian natural process more. oh speaking of i got my grinder and dripper so now i just need beans and then i can make fun little pour overs. i was going to get a bag after work today and then i remembered that cafes aren’t open at 7pm lmao, maybe i’ll pop in tomorrow morning, or just wait for a wfh day)
- Sherman’s Books: got another Yuko Tsushima book
- Lazy Sun: chatted with the shopkeepers about 3sixteen, def want to come back here and get some jeans
- Holy Donut: yupppppppppp it’s yummy
- This little book store that doesn’t even have a google maps listing: didn’t get anything but the woman running the shop was really nice, clearly cares a lot about photography and design books
- Izakaya Minato: really good!!!
While being in the city is nice, on Sunday morning we drove down to the river and Vibed, absolutely flawless temperature out, a slight breeze, and in a shady forest it was pretty much perfect. We sat out on a rock and dipped our feet in the river which was super refreshing. Nothing better I think!
